The part no one sees

A pattern lives inside a garment. It decides how it falls, how it moves and who it becomes.

When you look at a jacket you see the fabric, the colour, the buttons. You do not see the shape of the paper it was cut from. Yet that shape is everything: the curve of a sleeve head, the angle of a dart, the few millimetres that make a collar sit close to the neck.

With a pattern you can make anything. That is why it is so hard to learn.

I learned it slowly: first at home, then in classes, then in a small designer’s studio in London, and later in an industry that makes thousands of patterns a year. Each place had its own method. The Seams is where they meet.

The green jacket: drawings and sizes.

Sharing a pattern is sharing that knowledge. You receive the same lines we cut our collection from, graded in every size, with each step drawn out. What you make with them is yours.
